National news covers events and issues that have a broad impact on the country as a whole. This includes politics, major disasters and other subjects that affect the nation at large. It is a branch of journalism that is different from local news, which focuses on community events, crime reports and other topics affecting the city or town where the news is published. International news is a separate field that covers world events.
The largest news networks in the United States are CNN, Fox News Channel, MSNBC and NBC Universal’s cable division, which was renamed HLN in 2008. In addition to these nationally-focused channels, there are several independent satellite and cable channels that focus on national news, such as i24NEWS, an English language version of i24NEWS based in Israel.
Local television stations typically have in-house news departments that produce newscasts geared to the specific Designated Market Area (or DMA) in which they operate, such as Spectrum News, NY1 and New England Cable News. Regional 24-hour news channels that focus on local programming include the AccuWeather Network and Cheddar, a business channel launched in 2017 by Altice USA.
Many of these channels feature commentary and discussion shows on various political and social issues. In addition, some have special segments on a certain topic such as the environment, health or sports. They also provide a range of live events such as political rallies or debates, and offer interviews with celebrities. In addition, some of these channels have specialized sections, such as the Fox News Channel’s section on conservative opinion/talk programs and CNN’s coverage of political events.
